Our MediaWallah Careers Q&A offers one-on-ones talking MediaWallah, career paths, and life beyond work with MediaWallah teammates. Today’s guest: Sam Colon, Lead Data Analyst.
What’s your role at MediaWallah, and what do you do in the day-to-day?
As part of MediaWallah’s Operations team, I work to help streamline and improve technical processes that support the business. This almost always involves extensive SQL coding, whether for the purposes of QA, data cleaning, or deep-dive analysis. In addition, I try to automate repetitive data jobs where possible.
When did you join MediaWallah? What drew you to the company and/or role?
I joined in September of 2021. Previously, I worked at a multinational financial services company, and the sheer size of the company often left me feeling a bit lost in the shuffle. The prospect of working at a nimble innovative startup like MediaWallah was attractive to me. In addition, having briefly worked for an agency, I always found ad-tech interesting, so the role at MediaWallah really excited me.
How has the company changed since you first joined?
We’ve grown! I’ve only been here for a short time, but already, we’ve brought on a bunch of new talented people who I’m sure will help the business become more successful.
What are some ways you’ve advanced your own skill set at MW?
Before coming to MediaWallah, I hadn’t worked in a cloud-based data platform, so it’s been fun working in Snowflake and learning some of its nuances. For creating stored procedures in Snowflake, I’ve had to learn some basic Javascript, which is new to me, as I’d only programmed in Python and R previously.
What are some things that excite you most about working for MediaWallah?
As a relatively new employee, it’s exciting to be part of a rapidly growing company with a team of really smart, dedicated people. We’re working on some very cool projects, so I’m excited to continue growing and learning along with my team.
What’s something people might not know about you?
I’m a bit of a cinephile, and in my off-time, I’ve been working on a number of scripts. Nothing produced yet, but we’ll see what happens down the line!
What advice would you give to someone looking to advance their data career?
Try to find work that is challenging and forces you to learn. Those are the jobs that are ultimately the most rewarding and lead to greater success. ◆
